Located near the Amon Carter, Kimbell, and Modern Art museums, and within Fort Worth’s Cultural District, the brick-and-glass structure combines a children’s museum, planetarium, renovated Omni IMAX theater, and new interactive exhibits devoted to dinosaurs that roamed in Texas and the history of energy production, plus a series of interior courtyards with bold, brightly colored, and whimsical sculptures.
The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is located on 1600 Gendy Street, Fort Worth, Texas 76107 in the city’s Cultural District. It was opened in 1945 as the Fort Worth Children’s Museum and moved to its current location in 1954. In 1968, the museum adopted its current name. In the fall of 2007, the museum was closed for renovations. The entire museum was moved into a new building at the same site in 2009. The new building, was designed by architects Legorreta + Legorreta with Gideon Toal and consists of 166,000 square feet. The total maximum occupancy is 3,369 individuals. The museum’s grand opening after renovations was on Friday, November 20, 2009.
A distinctive 76-foot-tall glass tower marks the entrance of the 133,000-square-foot museum, acting as a focal point for the campus and emitting a golden glow that Legorreta describes as an “urban lantern.”
This delightful collection of tactile displays encourages learning for children and adults alike. A ferocious dinosaur offers greetings in the front walkway; attractive and enticing exhibits branch out in all directions. There are nine permanent galleries with themes ranging from Texas history to computers to fossils. Two of these include dino dig and kidSpace, specifically designed for younger children. One of the most popular attractions is the Omni Theater , an IMAX theater that shows 70mm films on a huge screen. The noble planetarium presents programs on astrology. Features and show times vary.
